Berkeley County, South Carolina · All-volunteer, since 1973
We collect, preserve, and share the history of Berkeley County — its churches, plantations, families, and founding communities — so it stays available to the people who call this county home.

Our mission
The Berkeley County Historical Society is a volunteer organization dedicated to collecting, documenting, and preserving the history of Berkeley County, South Carolina — from its colonial-era chapels and plantations to the families and communities that shaped it. We work to make this history available for education, research, and the public good.
Our board represents each of the county’s historic parishes, from St. Stephen and St. Thomas & St. Denis to St. James Goose Creek and Santee, so that no corner of the county’s story goes untold.

What we preserve
From the Strawberry Chapel of Ease and Pineville Chapel to the old Whitesville schoolhouse, Berkeley County holds layers of history that are easy to lose without someone keeping watch. We document these sites, gather family and parish records, and help researchers connect with their own Berkeley County roots.
